I don't know about you, but there are certain days of fishing where nothing goes as planned. Our knots break, we get stuck everywhere, we miss our keys and so on!! When it's bad, it's bad. And then when we think it couldn't be worse, we realize that our tackle box is completely upside down, we forgot our pair of scissors and our good friend Luc forgot his cooler filled with beer and sandwiches.
I'm not telling you anything, 50% of your fishing starts with good preparation. The more prepared we are, the easier our fishing will be. There are a lot of tools at our disposal to help us deal with all kinds of circumstances.
When I was younger, I brought a rod, two or three lures and left for a full day of fishing. Over the years, I have realized that certain accessories are of ultimate use to simplify my life.
I present to you my top 10 fishing ESSENTIALS.
Of course, a life jacket or even a boating safety kit is essential, but we'll keep it general.
Alright, let's get started:
1. The knife
Definitely the most versatile tool there is. Among other things, you can: cut your fishing line, open your fish and even get out of trouble in any way. If the going gets tough, your knife really can become your best friend. It's worth investing in a durable knife that won't rust easily and with a good sharp blade.
Sharp knives are safer than dull ones since they require less pressure to cut.
2. A bottle of water
Talk to Tom, there was a time when it almost went wrong for everyone in the boat. We were in the Outaouais, a heat wave like we had rarely seen. It was UNBEARABLE. The many hours under the sun pass and then suddenly, a big black cloud appears, a big rain beats directly on us. To tell the truth, this ephemeral rain did us more than good. But all good things must come to an end, it didn't take more than 5 minutes that we were again under the unbearable sun. But this time we had the right to a good big wave of humidity. Direction the chalet, we were a few minutes away from everyone having a heat stroke. To tell the truth, we miss some details since we were all more 100% lucid.
Basically, don't neglect your water. 😉
3. A pair of sunglasses
It can quickly become tiring fishing for several hours in the strong sun, UV rays reflect everywhere on the surface of the water and it quickly tires your eyes. But in addition, we are never safe from a false launch. Imagine a decoy hitting you hard in the face but more specifically in the region of your eyes... a horror story.

4. Mosquito repellent
The time we forget it, we remember it (but sometimes not well enough). It's just countless fishing trips where we thought we could do without it and finally not. Nothing worse than trying to fish while the mosquitoes are having a great time on your legs, or directly on your hands, or on your forehead, or on your neck, they are very arrogant these mosquitoes.🦟
5. Sunscreen
Generally, we must put on sunscreen every two hours → generally we fish for more than 2 hours.
For real, even if we leave and it's very cloudy, it's not uncommon for the temperatures to change during the day. If sunglasses are good for your eyes, sunscreen will be good for your skin.
6. Long nose pliers
Seriously, it's so much more effective than trying to remove the hook from the fish's mouth with your fingers. Especially since the fish can quickly be unpredictable while you have your fingers in its mouth. A good swipe of the tail and the fish is no longer the only hooked one (experienced fact). In addition, some fish like walleye and pike have good rows of fairly sharp teeth, in other words; it cuts like a razor blade.
7. A scoop
Obviously, it allows you to reduce the chances of losing your fish but there is more important. If you fish a certain species that can reach quite impressive sizes, you can more effectively bring it back into the boat, rods are generally not made to support the tension of a 20lb fish out of the water.
8. A cloth
Truth be told, that one isn't particularly essential. However, it's always good to have something to wipe your hands with. After all, it's not always fun having to wipe directly on our clothes.
9. A cap or hat
For the same reasons as the pair of glasses, it will protect you effectively against the rays that hit your head.☀️
10. Headlamp
The last and not the least. It's not always easy to hold your cell phone's flashlight in one hand and work with the other. This is probably one of the things that has most often made my life easier. Of course, it's not very practical during the day, but it still doesn't take up much space in a tackle box. It's better to always have it on you than to forget it when you need it.
Here is! These are the 10 accessories that I (try) never forget! They are all very important to me to simplify my fishing trips. All of the accessories can be found quite easily in any good hunting, fishing and outdoor store.
