I work in a hunting and fishing store and I receive a LOT of questions every day about the ideal type of shot to choose for deer hunting and I wanted to tell you a little about it today.
Several hunters question themselves year after year on the choice of ammunition to make and this, in all calibers combined. Personally I use a 30-06 , a 270 win and a twisted 12 gauge shotgun to hunt my favorite game which is deer. Certainly, there are higher-end ammunition than others. HOWEVER, there is no secret about the ideal ball. It all depends on your hunting situations and the habitat in which you are located. The shooting distance to be taken has a very important impact on the choice you will have to make. An important point to clarify is that any rifle does not necessarily digest the same ammunition well as another similar weapon.
There are balls made of lead such as the famous Core-Lokt from Remington, which is an extremely popular socket and above all ''entry level''. It is ideal for target shooting since it is not very expensive. Lead balls of this type fragment on impact and therefore, there is certainly lead in the game. Even though the impact force is high, it's not really the perfect type of ammunition for hunting.
The second bullet I want to talk to you about is the one I use most frequently, the fused one. Probably the best ammunition choice for you too, this cannonball is made of lead AND fused copper also called bonded . There are some with a soft tip (soft point) and others have a tip with a polymer head, which helps to improve the velocity of it. These cannonballs perform well at both short and long distances and do not fragment on impact, so they form a nice big ''mushroom'' with a big impact force. Example: Federal Fusion, Winchester Ballistic Silvertip and Hornady SST.
The third and last one I want to tell you about is the famous ball made of copper such as the Barnes VOR-TX and the Hornady GMX. Very efficient at long distance, the 100% copper cannonball does not inflict very large wounds at short distance and it can be difficult to find a lot of blood where you will shoot your game...
Without having gone into too much detail, several variants and other specifications can be taken into account when choosing ammunition. For deer hunting, I recommend that you use between 150 and 165 grains ideally.
I do not have the absolute truth but I hope that my explanations on the different types of cannonball can help you to choose the ideal one for your deer hunt.
I still recommend that you inquire directly at your favorite hunting store, the specialists will give you more sound advice and more details.
Do not hesitate to write to us for more information, it makes us and will always be a great pleasure to talk to you.
I wish you the BUCK OF YOUR LIFE.
