5 EASY RECIPES to make with MOOSE MEAT!

Moose hunting is just around the corner and what good would a great harvest be if you didn't know what to do with it? Since I was introduced to the world of hunting, cooking with wood meat has opened my horizons and fascinates me more and more. Often, we come home and we can't wait to know what dishes we are going to prepare with our meat.

In this article, we decided to present you five easy recipes that we can make with moose meat. We will start with the ingredients and then the steps. It should be noted that the photos were taken from the internet while waiting for them to be those of our plates!

1. Shepherd's pie with moose meat au gratin (4 people)

"Moose-corn-potato" nothing simpler than that!

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg of minced moose meat
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 chopped onion and 2 chopped garlic cloves
  • 0.5 cans corn kernels, drained
  • 0.5 cans of creamed corn
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese of your choice
  • Salt and pepper, to taste!

The steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the ground moose meat and season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook, stirring, until the meat is cooked through, about 10 minutes.
  4. Arrange the potato slices in a buttered baking dish. Pour the moose meat mixture over the top.
  5. In a bowl, beat the eggs, potatoes and milk to make mashed potatoes. Pour this mixture over the meat and corn. Sprinkle with the cheese you like.
  6. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the cheese is golden brown and the dish is set.
Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

The second is how I eat my burger. You'll see it's like in a restaurant but 10 times better.

2. The “Alldress” Moose Burger (2 people)

Swap beef for moose meat for unique and tasty burgers. Serve with your favorite condiments.

Ingredients:

  • 500g of minced moose meat
  • red onions, romaine lettuce, onion rings and cheese curds.
  • 4 burger buns.
Mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, hot sauce according to your taste.
Quite simple but so delicious!

The steps:

  1. Prepare 4 steaks of ground moose meat, about 125g each. Season with salt and pepper.

  2. Cook the 4 steaks and the buns on the BBQ. (also works in a frying pan)
  3. Wait until the meat is cooked enough and then garnish your burgers to your taste!

3. Slow Cooker Moose Cubes (Serves 4)

A comforting classic, this moose stew is slow-cooked in a blend of vegetables, herbs and spices. Simmer for several hours until the meat becomes tender and meltingly tender.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb cubed moose
  • 3 medium carrots, cubed
  • 2 medium potatoes, cubed
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 stalks of celery, chopped
  • 1/4 cup red wine
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 can tomato paste (156 ml)
  • 1 1/3 cups water
  • salt and pepper to taste

The steps:

  1. Mix the moose cubes and vegetables in the slow cooker.
  2. Mix together red wine, onion soup, tomato paste and water.
  3. Pour the mixture over the moose cubes and mix.
  4. Cook for 6 hours on high and serve!

4. Spaghetti with moose meat (4 people)

What's better than a good meal of moose meat spaghetti just before working out. For cheese lovers, you can add a parmesan fondue on top!

Ingredients:

  • 0.5lb ground moose
  • 1/2 can (796 ml) diced tomato
  • 1/2 can (796 ml) tomato juice
  • 1 can (156 ml) tomato paste
  • 1 can (398 ml) tomato sauce
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 onions
  • 1 green pepper
  • 2 celery branches
  • 2 tablespoons Italian spices
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon pepper
  • 2 bay leaves

The steps:

  1. In a saucepan or wok, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground moose meat and cook until golden brown, breaking it up with a spoon, about 7-8 minutes.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the onion is translucent.
  3. Pour in the diced tomatoes and tomato paste. Season with oregano, salt and pepper.
  4. Simmer over low heat for 20-25 minutes, stirring regularly, until the sauce has reduced and is very smooth.
  5. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions.
  6. Drain the pasta and serve on plates, generously topped with the moose tomato sauce.
  7. Sprinkle with grated parmesan or cheese of your choice!

5. Marinated Moose Skewers (4-6 people)

Ingredients :

For the marinade:

  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

For the skewers:

  • 1 kg moose meat, cut into 3 cm cubes
  • Onions, peppers and mushrooms, cut into pieces

For accompaniments, you can add rice or salad!

  1. In a bowl, prepare the marinade by mixing all the ingredients.

  2. Add the moose meat cubes and coat well. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for 2 to 4 hours.

  3. Preheat barbecue or grill to medium-high heat.

  4. Thread the pieces of marinated meat and vegetables onto skewers alternately.

  5. Grill the skewers for 8 to 10 minutes, turning regularly, until the meat is cooked through.

  6. Serve the moose skewers hot, accompanied by cooked rice and a green salad.

Moose is a delicious and nutritious meat that lends itself to many preparations. I hope these 5 recipes inspire you to further explore the culinary possibilities of this wild protein.
